Tuesday Conversations, S1E17 (PODCAST): How Do You Talk about White Supremacy with a Comedian? My attempt on "Standup! with Pete Dominick"
Plus, loving our neighbors amid 800,000 deaths from COVID-19.
It’s Tuesday, #WhiteTooLong readers. And it’s December 13, the day we’ve passed a grim milestone we all knew was coming: The COVID-19 virus as now claimed over 800,000 American lives, including the lives of 1 out of every 100 older Americans. To put this into perspective, NBC News noted, “That's more than in any other nation, and more than the population of Boston, Washington, D.C., or Seattle.”
If you missed last Friday’s post, I wrote about my own frustrations with the cavalier and callous responses of white evangelical Protestants, some among my family and friends, to this national trial. Most maddeningly, after 800,000 dead—three quarters of whom were vulnerable seniors—white evangelical Protestants remain the only major religious group in the country who does NOT believe that getting vaccinated is a way to live out the principle of loving your neighbor, according to a just-released survey by PRRI and IFYC. How Do You Talk about White Supremacy with a Comedian? My attempt on "Standup! with Pete Dominick"
I really enjoyed this recent conversation with comedian Pete Dominick, a podcaster, stand-up comic, speaker, news commentator, host, journo activist, moderator, professional speaking consultant, husband, and proud father of two daughters.
Stand Up! is a full format show featuring a comprehensive news recap and 2 guests almost everyday. Here’s how Pete describes the show:
Stand Up! with Pete Dominick is a classroom where we laugh and learn together. I will interview the smartest people I can find about how to save the planet, our democracy and ourselves. We will talk about the issues that matter to you, your health, the health of your family, community, country and the environment with experts who know the best. And we will laugh while we do it.
Pete’s a great interviewer, and I was thrilled to be in conversation with him. Click below to listen.
More about Pete Dominick
He began his career as a stand-up comic making a name for himself and earning respect in the major leagues of stand-up—the NYC comedy scene—where he became a regular at all the best clubs.
Pete was selected for the very coveted gig as the warmup comic, first for Jon Stewart and The Daily Show, and then The Colbert Report on Comedy Central, where he worked for most of its run. CNN hired him in as their man on the street which led to him becoming a regular panel commentator, eventually taking the host role of his own CNN show “What the Week.”
Before launching his podcast, for almost 12 years, Pete was the host of a daily three-hour live radio show on SIRIUSXM, “Stand Up with Pete Dominick.”
