This week I’m bringing you an illuminating conversation between two people I’m honored to call friends and colleagues: Kelly Brown Douglas and Danté Stewart (more on each of them below).

I have learned a lot from their beautiful writing and courageous witness—about Jesus, about how white Christian spaces have been and continue to be damaging for Black people and other people of color, and about hope. I’m also proud to be institutionally connected with both of them. Kelly serves on the board of directors for PRRI, and Danté is studying at Candler School of Theology at Emory University, my alma mater.

It’s such a rich conversation. Particularly if you are white, I hope you’ll listen to the end, where Danté talks about what hope looks like.

ICYMI, I wrote a very personal post last Friday, responding to the news that Republican lawmakers in Florida want to make it illegal for schools and businesses to make white people uncomfortable (Yes, you read that correctly). Writing this one took me to a new place. It’s below.

About Danté Stewart

Danté Stewart is a speaker and a writer whose work has been featured in The New York Times, CNN, in The Washington Post, ESPN’s The Undefeated,  Sojourners, Religion News Service, and elsewhere. He received his BA in sociology from Clemson University and is currently studying at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He is the author of Shoutin’ In The Fire: An American Epistle.

About Kelly Brown Douglas

The Very Reverend Dr. Kelly Brown Douglas was named Dean of the Episcopal Divinity School at Union Theological Seminary and Professor of Theology at Union in September 2017.  She was named the Bill and Judith Moyers Chair in Theology in November 2019.  She also serves as the Canon Theologian at the Washington National Cathedral and Theologian in Residence at Trinity Church Wall Street. Ordained as an Episcopal priest in 1983, Dean Douglas holds a master’s degree in theology and a Ph.D. in systematic theology from Union. She is the author of six books, including Resurrection Hope: A Future Where Black Lives Matter.
