Tuesday Conversations, Episode 2 (VIDEO): Christians Against Christianity? With Obery Hendricks Jr. and Friends

A Conversation with Obery M. Hendricks Jr., Lisa Sharon Harper, and Jim Wallis

For my second installment of Tuesday Conversations, I’m very happy to share a recent roundtable I moderated with Obery M. Hendricks Jr., Lisa Sharon Harper, and Jim Wallis. This was a rare privilege: They are all prominent public theologians, each with a strong prophetic witness over the years. I’m honored to call them friends, colleagues, and fellow travelers.

The occasion for our gathering was the recent publication of Obery’s important book, Christians Against Christianity: How Right-Wing Evangelicals are Destroying Our Nation and Our Faith.

I had the privilege of reading a galley copy and wrote an endorsement for the book. Here’s what I had to say. I hope you all will read and add to your bookshelves:

It’s a sign of our unsettling times when a figure like Obery Hendricks Jr.—respected biblical scholar, former seminary president, and elder in the church—calls on his fellow Christians to rise up against what much of contemporary Christianity has become. Christians against Christianity is a searing indictment of white evangelicals’ allegiance to white supremacy and political power and a clarion call to all Christians to go back to the Bible to reclaim a faith rooted in love and responsibility for others rather than dominion and self-interest. This is a must-read book for this crucial moment in our nation’s history.

Here’s the full video of this rich, wide-ranging discussion.

Here are the bios of the participants:

Finally, sharing a continuing story about my first Friday post two weeks ago, Honoring the Honest Contradictions at Montpelier (James Madison’s family plantation). Following publication, I was pleased to see that the Twitter accounts of both the Montpelier Descendents Commission and Madison’s Montpelier picked up the story.
